APOPO is rated 3 out of 5 in the category nonprofit organization management. Read and write reviews about APOPO. APOPO saves lives through the deployment of Detection Rats Technology, deploying cost-efficient mine action solutions in affected countries, accelerating tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis in high TB-burden countries, and researching and developing innovative detection rats technology applications. Overall, we train RATS to SAVE LIVES. Our mission is to provide solutions for global problems and inspire positive social change. Our focus on mine action and tuberculosis detection is with the hope of addressing humanitarian challenges. WHY LANDMINES? - http://bit.ly/2IxevXV Over 60 countries are contaminated by landmines and other explosive remnants of war. Because landmines are victim-activated they kill indiscriminately. In 2016 landmines and explosive remnants of war caused at least 8,605 casualties, of which 78% were civilians and 42% children. The threat of landmines also hampers economic recovery and development in war damaged areas. Villages are cut off from basic necessities such as water supplies and essential travel routes, and are prevented from using fertile land for the cultivation of crops, grazing livestock or development. WHY TB? - http://bit.ly/2IxQwrK Tuberculosis is now the biggest global killer from an infectious disease. There are approximately 10 million new global cases of tuberculosis per year and around 1.6 million people die from the disease. In most sub-Saharan African countries only about half of the patients with active tuberculosis are diagnosed. TB incidence has decreased by an average of 1.5% since 2000. According to WHO estimates, the decline is too low to meet the target set by the WHO’s “End TB Strategy”, which requires 4 to 5 percent rates of annual declines by 2020. What is needed is a fast and accurate mass-screening tool. Working alongside conventional methods as an “add-on” technology, APOPO aims to make its HeroRATs the standard “go-to” tool for quickly increasing tuberculosis detection rates at health clinics.
